ANTI-SCHOOL by Gbolahan Ahmed

SAVIOURS
Albert Einstein once said "everybody is a genius but if you judge a fish by the ability to climb tree, it will live its whole live believing that it is stupid''.
Today modern day schooling not only make fish climb trees but also make them climb down and do a ten mile run. Do you realize how many student relate to that fish swimming upstream in class never finding their gifts, thinking they are stupid, believing they are useless? I call school and accuse it of killing creativity, individuality and being intellectual abusive.
School is an ancient institution that has outlived its usage, in literally more than a century  nothing has changed yet school claim to prepare students for the future, but I believe school prepare them for the past. I did a background check and saw that school was made to train people to work in factories that's why they put students in straight rows, nice and neat; tell them to sit still, raise their hand before they speak; give them a short break to eat and for 8hrs a day; tell them what to think and make them compete for As.
But now the world has progressed, we need people who are creative, people who think innovatively, critically and independently with the ability to connect. Every scientist will tell  you that no two brains are the same; so please explain why schools treat students the same giving them this "one size fits all" crap. If a doctor prescribes the same drug for all his patients, the result will be fatal, tragic, when it comes to school, this exactly same thing happens. This educational malpractice where one teacher stands in front of 30 kids, each having different strengths, ability, needs, gifts, dreams, and you teach the same thing the same way? Thats horrific!
Its a shame teachers have the most important job in the planet yet they are under-paid, no wonder so many student are short-changed. Lets be honest, teachers should earn just as much as doctors. Teachers are heroes that often get blamed but they are not the problem. They work in a system without many options. Curriculums are created by policy makers most of which have never taught in their life.
I dont have much faith in school but I have much faith in people. It is our duty to upgrade and change education. Lets give every gift an equal chance. I know it sounds like a dream but countries like Finland are doing impressive things. They have shorter school days, teachers make decent wages. Home work is non-existent and focus on collaboration instead of competition. Their educational system outperforms every other country in the world. Because while student are 20% of the population they are 100% of the future. Lets attend to their dreams, thers no limit to what we can achieve, this is a world in which I believe.
