HOW BIG IS THE RINDERPEST PROBLEM?
Rinderpest, although eradicated from Nigeria in 1974 after the JP15 campaign, was reintroduced into Sokoto state in 1980 and again into Borno state in 1983. The latter outbreak spread rapidly throughout Nigeria and severely reduced the cattle population. An estimated one million cattle were lost. An outbreak occurred at the Maiduguri zoo, in Borno state, in January 1983 and killed 15 elands and six sitatungas. In March 1983, rinderpest appeared in Yankari game reserve in adjoining Bauchi state and caused mortality in several species of wildlife. A total of 207 buffalo, 20 warthog, eight waterbuck and two bushbuck carcasses were recovered (Shanthikumar SR, et al.).
Rinderpest will doubtlessly wreak havoc on multiple aspects of the existence of region(s) that would be affected seeing as even their economy will certainly suffer a setback if allowed to return. On a larger scale, the return of rinderpest will induce an upset in global health such that resources would have to be deployed to ensure the containment of the outbreak by concerned governments and international health organizations. In places where cattle rearing is a major occupation of many (which includes a significant fraction of Africa), rinderpest would invoke unbearable economic loss directly or indirectly on individuals (of the human population) if allowed to set into the cattle population by any means; food security would go into turmoil in such places and the availability of animal protein would fall drastically...
To ensure rinderpest remains in the past, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) developed a serious game to prepare veterinarians, veterinary students and laboratory technicians for a possible outbreak. Aside the fact that a reward is attached to winning the challenge, personally, I consider it dutiful for veterinarians, veterinary students and veterinary laboratory technicians to support the OIE in this cause and engage themselves in this game with the purpose of making sure that rinderpest never returns.
