TRUST IN LEADERSHIP by Abubakar Sadiq

BISMILLAHI RAHMANI RAHEEM
All thanks and gratitude are due to Allah alone, and peace and blessings upon His noble prophet.

Verily Allah said in the Glorious Qur'an Q4:V58;
"Verily, Allah commands that you should render back the trusts to those, to whom they are due; and that when you judge between men, you judge with justice. Verily, how excellent is the teaching which He (Allah) gives you! Truly, Allah is Ever All-Hearer, All-Seer"

Sheikh Ibn Kathir commented about it in his tafsir; Allah commands that the trusts be returned to their rightful owners.
Al-Hasan narrated that Samurah said that the Messenger of Allah said, Return the trust to those who entrusted you, and do not betray those who betrayed you. Imam Ahmad and the collectors of Sunan recorded this Hadith.
This command refers to all things that one is expected to look after, such as Allah's rights on His servants: praying, Zakah, fasting, penalties for sins, vows and so forth. The command also includes the rights of the servants on each other, such as what they entrust each other with, including the cases that are not recorded or documented. Allah commands that all types of trusts be fulfillled. Those who do not implement this command in this life, it will be extracted from them on the Day of Resurrection
It is recorded in the Sahih that the Messenger of Allah said,
The rights will be rendered back to those to whom they are due, and even the sheep that does not have horns will take revenge from the horned sheep.
It has been a tradition on campus during elections, students tend to cast their votes ignorantly, they base their choices of candidates mostly upon whom discloses or informs them of  his ambition first. Rather, the choice should be based on who one feels is competent and able to discharge whatever duty he is aspiring for. It should be a choice one can defend anywhere and anytime if the need arises. But above all, we should know that we would account for it in the presence of The All- Mighty. What reply are you ready to give to your Lord on the reason for the choice you made. Just because you share a room?, a state?, a locality?, a tribe??? Never should your choice be based on any worldly or sentimental attachment.
From the above verse, trust here would refer to those trusted with the mantle of leadership. Therefore, a leader chosen by you should be worthy of been one. He should be the best among all the aspiring candidates. He should be the most pious, most trustworthy, most kind, he should be best among all the aspirants in all the qualities needed from a leader.
Suhail reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said on the Day of Khaibar: I shall certainly give this standard in the hand of one who loves Allah and his Messenger and Allah will grant victory at his hand. Umar b. Khattab said: Never did I cherish for leadership but on that day. I came before him with the hope that I may be called for this, but Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) called 'Ali b. Abu Talib and he conferred (this honour) upon him and said: Proceed on and do not look about until Allah grants you victory...
Sahih Muslim 2405, In-book : Book 44, Hadith 52
From the above hadith, we can see that leadership was given to Ali purposely because Allah and His messenger love him, which was due to his piety and piousness. Not because he was a relative or in-law of the proohet. It was because he also loved Allah and His prophet which (the love) would prevent him from any form of disobedience.
Therefore, piety should be the fundamental quality one should first seek from an aspirant, piouness and closeness to Allah and his messenger. For verily, whomever encompasses piety in his heart would never be found on the negative.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Verily Allah ta'ala has said: "Whosoever shows enmity to a wali (friend) of Mine, then I have declared war against him. And My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved to Me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him. And My servant continues to draw near to me with nafil (supererogatory) deeds until I Love him. When I Love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, and his sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him; and were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him refuge.' " [Al-Bukhari]     40 Hadith Nawawi 38.
What do you think would the behaviors of one who is loved and protected by Allah. Somone whose limbs (actions) are guided by Allah. He is so loved because he loves his Lord above everyone. Hence, making him do right at all times due to His consciousness. No wonder the famous khalif of Islam Umar bn AbdulAzeez was so famous for his just leadership. It only lasted a total of two years yet, no one was eligible to receive zakat because everyone had enough wealth (see Tarikhul Khulafa by Imam sayudi, Al-bidaaya wan Nihaaya by Imam bn Kathir) Such is the condition of the people in which leadership is bestowed upon whom really deserves it. Upon whom is conscience of his Lord at all times, who puts justice towards his followers above everything, whose mandate is the wellbeing and proper welfare of his people.
A leader should be choosed based on the following characters and qualities
1. Faith and belief.
2. Knowledge and Wisdom.
3. Courage and determination.
4. Mutual consultation and Unity. (Fraternity and brotherhood.)
5. Morality and Piety(Honesty and trust.)
6. Superior communication.
7. Justice and compassion.
8. Patience and Endurance.
9. Commitment and Sacrifice.
10. Lifelong Endeavour.
11. Gratitude and Prayers.
I call on all the Muslim Students on campus to shun selfish interest and other unlawful acts, place all those aspiring on a scale of all the above.  It is our duty to vote in the right Person.  But Allah will choose from among us the best for our community.
